Minnesota is reeling from the shocking assassination of former Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman, with Senator Amy Klobuchar sharing heartbreaking details and a plea for public vigilance during an emotional interview on “Meet the Press” Sunday. The attack also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.
Senator Klobuchar offered a poignant tribute to her long-time friend and colleague, Melissa Hortman, describing her as an “incredible woman” and a “true public servant.” Hortman, a mother of two who balanced political life with being a Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher, rose to become an “extraordinary Speaker of the House,” ushering in landmark legislation such as free school lunch and paid family leave.

“I just wish everyone in the political world knew this woman like we know her in Minnesota, loved by Democrats and Republicans,” Senator Klobuchar stated, emphasizing Hortman’s ability to work across the aisle, even with a tied legislature, to get the budget done. The Senator revealed she had been with Hortman just hours before the attack at a political dinner, a joyful occasion now overshadowed by profound grief.
The senseless violence also targeted State Senator John Hoffman, who entered politics to advocate for his daughter with spina bifida, and his wife. Senator Klobuchar provided a cautious update on their condition, stating they are “hanging in there” and in “stable condition” after multiple surgeries.
The ongoing manhunt for the suspect, identified as Vance Boelter, a former private security company employee, remains a top priority for law enforcement. Boelter, who allegedly impersonated a police officer to gain entry to homes, is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Authorities have issued alerts in Minnesota and South Dakota, and the FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Senator Klobuchar described a “chilling image” from a doorbell camera, showing Boelter in a mask just moments before the murders. She urged the public not to approach him, but to immediately call tip lines with any sightings, emphasizing his “off-balance” mental state and the “murderous acts that he committed.”
While the investigation into the motive is ongoing, Senator Klobuchar confirmed that the attacks appear to be “politically motivated.” She highlighted a “throughline with abortion” due to names of prominent pro-choice individuals and Planned Parenthood clinics found on a manifesto associated with Boelter. However, she cautioned against speculation, urging the public to allow law enforcement to conduct their thorough investigation.

When pressed about her own safety, given that Senator Tina Smith was reportedly on a target list, Senator Klobuchar remained unfazed.
“No. I’m not,” she responded, acknowledging that she has received increased security without her request. Her primary concern, she stressed, is not for political leaders who have received extra protection, but for “innocents out there” who might unknowingly encounter the dangerous suspect.
As the community grapples with this devastating loss and ongoing threat, Senator Klobuchar’s words underscored the profound impact of political violence and the urgent need for unity and vigilance in the face of such tragedy. The focus, she reiterated, remains on upholding the memory of Melissa Hortman, praying for the recovery of Senator Hoffman and his wife, and the paramount goal of finding Vance Boelter.
