McConnell: I’ll ‘Absolutely’ Back Trump if He’s the GOP Pick in ’24

It’s arguable that Republicans have not had a more favorable partnership than former President Donald Trump and former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

And for one reason: judges.

McConnell’s relentless, methodical push to seat more than 200 federal judges named by Trump – including bolstering Supreme Court nominees Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett amid ferocious liberal attacks – was the capstone of Trump’s domestic policy agenda. It also has helped ensure the Constitution will still matter among the federal judiciary in the Biden era.

That partnership, however, took a hit recently – although Thursday signaled another turn, suggesting bygones apparently seem to be bygones, so long as Joe Biden occupies the White House.

During closing arguments of Trump’s recent impeachment trial, over the tragic Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, McConnell declared that the rioters were “fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth. Because he was angry he’d lost an election.”

“Former President Trump’s actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty,” McConnell added.

“There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it,” McConnell argued.

“The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president,” he said. “And having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth.”

Trump responded in true Trumpian fashion, even after McConnell voted to acquit him.

The 45th president issued a statement saying, “The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm.”

“It was a complete election disaster in Georgia and certain other swing states. McConnell did nothing, and will never do what needs to be done in order to secure a fair and just electoral system into the future. He doesn’t have what it takes, never did, and never will,” Trump said.

“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,” Trump continued.

But on Thursday, McConnell told Fox News’s Bret Baier that he would stand behind Trump again if he was the party’s 2024 nominee.

“There’s a lot to happen between now and ’24. I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president. … Should be a wide-open race,” McConnell said on Fox.

When Baier asked McConnell if he would support Trump if he captures the GOP nomination in 2024, the Kentucky Republican replied, “The nominee of the party? Absolutely.”

McConnell added that Biden would be the glue to hold Republicans together in the near future.
