Multiple people were injured, with some reportedly set on fire, in an attack at a popular outdoor pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday. Police have taken a man into custody in connection with the incident, which the FBI swiftly described as a “targeted terror attack.”

The assault occurred at a pedestrian mall where demonstrators had gathered for a rally calling for the release of hostages held in Gaza.

Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn addressed reporters Sunday evening, stating that it was “too early to discuss a motive” and that witnesses were being interviewed.

“It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on,” Chief Redfearn said.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that “Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.”

Boulder Police rapidly moved to evacuate several blocks of the usually bustling pedestrian mall area, confirming “several victims” but not providing specific details on the number or extent of injuries at the time of the update. Unconfirmed reports from witnesses indicate that the suspect may have used Molotov cocktails in the attack.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis released a statement indicating he was “closely monitoring” the situation. “Hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable,” Polis added, emphasizing the state’s commitment to supporting the ongoing investigation.
