Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is set to introduce legislation Monday afternoon aimed at prohibiting biological males from participating in women’s sports programs at United States military academies, the Daily Caller News Foundation has learned.

The bill, posted to Tuberville’s website, would mandate that the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy do not permit individuals of the male sex to compete in athletic programs or activities designated for women or girls.

The proposed legislation defines “sex” as “a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

“The Secretary of Defense shall ensure that the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, and the United States Air Force Academy do not permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls,” the bill states.

The bill includes a rule of construction that clarifies that it would not prohibit males from training or practicing with women’s teams, so long as no female athlete is deprived of a roster spot, participation opportunity, scholarship, or any other related benefit.

A former collegiate head football coach at Auburn University, Senator Tuberville has been a vocal proponent of legislation aimed at ensuring what he and other supporters term “fairness in women’s sports.” This new bill specifically targets the nation’s military service academies, bringing the national debate on transgender athletes to the steps of these storied institutions.

Proponents of such measures argue that biological differences between males and females give transgender women an unfair athletic advantage and that such legislation is necessary to protect the integrity of women’s sports and the opportunities afforded to female athletes under Title IX.

Critics of similar bills have argued that they are discriminatory and harmful to transgender individuals. They contend that such legislation often targets a small and vulnerable population and that decisions regarding athletic participation should be left to sporting organizations.

The introduction of this bill follows a series of similar legislative efforts by Senator Tuberville and other Republican lawmakers at both the state and federal levels. These efforts have consistently sparked heated debate, drawing in voices from the worlds of politics, sports, and civil rights.

The proposed legislation will be formally introduced and referred to the appropriate committee for consideration. As of this report, it is unclear which committee will review the bill.
