Karine Jean-Pierre, who served as White House Press Secretary under President Joe Biden, has announced her departure from the Democratic Party, declaring herself an independent.

The news comes as Jean-Pierre prepares to release a new book, “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines,” which is set to hit shelves on October 21.

According to reports from her publisher, Legacy Lit, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, Jean-Pierre’s decision to switch affiliations was not taken lightly.

In a statement released Wednesday, Jean-Pierre expressed her conviction that Americans should transcend traditional political divisions and embrace independent thought.

“Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States,” Jean-Pierre stated. “At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country. I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes. We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.”

Jean-Pierre, 50, was the first Black woman and openly gay person to hold the position of White House Press Secretary.

She succeeded Jen Psaki in 2022, having previously served as deputy press secretary and a senior advisor during Biden’s 2020 campaign. Her career in Democratic politics also includes a role as regional political director during President Barack Obama’s first term.

The upcoming book promises an insider’s perspective on the Biden administration, including a close look at the three weeks that led to President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election and what Jean-Pierre describes as a “betrayal by the Democratic Party” that influenced his choice.

The publisher’s announcement suggests the book will present “clear arguments and provocative evidence as an insider about the importance of dismantling the torrent of disinformation and misinformation that has been rampant in recent elections and provides passionate insight for moving forward.”
