A Brazilian national convicted of murder in his home country has been arrested in Milford, Massachusetts, following a joint operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI.

Fernando Antonio Vieira-Martins, 34, was taken into custody on May 1, 2025, by officers from ICE Boston and agents from FBI Boston. Vieira-Martins was wanted by Brazilian authorities to serve a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of murder.

According to ICE, Vieira-Martins was convicted of murder in Brazil on June 29, 2022, and sentenced to 24 years and nine months in prison. He fled Brazil after his conviction.

Authorities say that Vieira-Martins illegally entered the United States near Calexico, California, on March 9, 2023, circumventing lawful inspection, admission, or parole by U.S. immigration officials.

On May 10, 2023, Brazilian authorities issued a criminal arrest warrant for Vieira-Martins due to his failure to serve the sentence for his murder conviction.

“Fernando Antonio Vieira-Martins murdered someone in his home country and attempted to subvert justice by fleeing to the United States. He represents a significant hazard to the residents of Massachusetts,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. “While some in New England may be perfectly fine with criminal alien offenders settling in our communities, ICE Boston will continue to prioritize the safety of our law-abiding public by arresting and removing such criminal alien threats to our neighbors.”

Since his arrest on May 1, Vieira-Martins has remained in ICE custody. He is currently being held pending removal proceedings.
