A California man has been sentenced to over a year in prison, followed by six months of home confinement and three years of supervised release, for making numerous violent threats against various individuals and groups in North Carolina. Kevin Day Dunlow, 62, of Huntington Beach, California, received the sentence after being found guilty of two counts of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.
According to court records and evidence presented, between May 1, 2024, and May 16, 2024, Dunlow engaged in a series of threatening communications. His targets included an elected official, members of law enforcement, a church in northeastern North Carolina, and two synagogues located in Raleigh and Durham.
One incident on May 1, 2024, involved Dunlow calling the Wake County Sheriff’s Office dispatch, threatening a bomb at the office, and telling the dispatcher, “we’re going to kill you.”

On May 10, 2024, Dunlow placed a call to a Rabbi just before evening services were to commence, stating, “Jews didn’t deserve to live. Jews didn’t deserve to be on this earth. I’m going to kill the Jews. I’m coming to the Temple to kill all the Jews and the children.”
Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar condemned Dunlow’s actions, stating, “Threats of violence against the Jewish community and law enforcement officials are not only despicable, they are also a grave federal crime that we take seriously.” Bubar commended the FBI’s swift response, which led to Dunlow’s apprehension and subsequent accountability, allowing the community to “breathe easier.”
James C. Barnacle Jr., the FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge in North Carolina, emphasized the broad scope of Dunlow’s threats.

“Kevin Dunlow made violent threats against several groups of people. He targeted law enforcement, elected officials and their families, even local faith leaders, spewing vicious threats over the phone,” Barnacle said. He underscored the importance of safety for those who serve the community in various capacities.
The announcement of the sentencing was made by Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, following the sentencing by U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Raleigh-based Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gabriel J. Diaz and Erin Blondel prosecuted the case.
