A legally armed private citizen is being hailed as a potential lifesaver after intervening in a violent incident in downtown Seattle on Wednesday night, a move that has reignited the debate on gun rights and public safety in a city known for its restrictive gun policies.

According to the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), the armed Samaritan “just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” witnessing a brutal attack that escalated into a shooting.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb stated that the individual observed an argument among three people, two of whom were shot and seriously wounded by a 16-year-old suspect, who was reportedly illegally carrying a handgun.

“In a city where political policies have resulted in reduced police manpower while placing limits on the officers who remain,” Gottlieb commented, “it should come as no surprise that an increasing number of law-abiding citizens are now licensed to carry firearms for their personal protection.” He pointed out that Seattle and King County boast the highest number of active firearm licenses in Washington state.

The incident occurred mere blocks from a fatal stabbing that took place around the same time, highlighting ongoing concerns about crime in the city. The armed citizen remained at the scene and is reportedly cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Gottlieb also noted the “dead silence” from gun control advocacy groups headquartered in Seattle following the incident.

“There has been nary a peep, which seems to have become customary whenever an armed citizen takes action in defense of himself or others, anywhere in the country,” he observed.

While Seattle police arrived within minutes, Gottlieb reiterated the common adage, “when seconds count, police are minutes away,” underscoring the critical role the armed citizen played. He also cited an online opinion poll by KOMO News indicating that a significant 70 percent of respondents feel unsafe when working or visiting downtown Seattle.

“There’s a message in that to Mayor Bruce Harrell and the city council, and maybe even a moral,” Gottlieb concluded. “In a city which has done its worst to disarm honest citizens while crime has increased, it is ironic that an armed citizen appears to have done what the city hasn’t.”
