Bowdoin College is under increasing pressure from Capitol Hill, as two prominent Republican congressmen are demanding the Maine institution release disciplinary records related to alleged antisemitic incidents on campus.
Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee Chairman Burgess Owens (R-UT) sent a stern letter to Bowdoin on Monday, June 2, 2025, accusing the college of failing to comply with an ongoing congressional investigation into the rise of antisemitism on college campuses.

The core of the dispute centers on a student encampment at Bowdoin from February 10-14, 2025. Walberg and Owens are seeking “all documents related to the disciplinary action taken against students or faculty involved in the encampment,” a detailed account of how the encampment disbanded, and a comprehensive list of all student disciplinary cases concerning alleged antisemitic incidents or unauthorized encampments since October 7, 2023.
According to the letter, the Committee initially requested these documents on March 27, 2025. However, Walberg and Owens assert that despite “repeated follow-up requests,” Bowdoin has “failed to meaningfully comply.”

“Bowdoin’s failure to produce these documents in a timely manner is unacceptable,” the lawmakers wrote, concluding with a stark warning: “If Bowdoin should continue to refuse to fully comply with the Committee’s requests, the Committee will proceed with issuing compulsory process.”
The letter sets a deadline of June 16, 2025, for Bowdoin to provide the requested information. This ongoing investigation aims to inform potential legislative reforms designed to protect Jewish students on college campuses.
