Former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been hit with a hefty $675,000 fine by the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) on Friday, bringing his total penalties for improper campaign coordination to $1.3 million. The CFB’s decision comes amidst reports that Cuomo’s mayoral campaign improperly colluded with a Super PAC supporting his bid for Gracie Mansion.

In a contrasting move, the board simultaneously awarded millions in public matching funds to one of Cuomo’s primary opponents, New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. Adams reportedly received $2.4 million in public matching funds, a significant boost to her campaign.

The CFB stated its decision to withhold $1.3 million in potential matching funds from Cuomo’s campaign was based on its belief that an advertisement produced by a pro-Cuomo PAC was not created independently of his campaign. This latest financial blow adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding the former governor.

Neither the Cuomo nor Adams campaigns immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the CFB’s rulings.

This development marks another chapter in Cuomo’s post-gubernatorial career, which has been plagued by scandal. He resigned as governor in 2021 following allegations of sexual assault, and more recently, the Department of Justice has reportedly launched an investigation into whether he lied to Congress about COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes during his tenure.

In the crowded Democratic mayoral primary, the first candidate to reach the maximum public matching funds was state Representative Zohran Mamdani, a socialist. Mamdani has consistently polled in second place behind Cuomo and has shown gains in recent polling.

Adrienne Adams, despite receiving a substantial injection of public funds, polled in fifth place in a Wednesday Emerson College poll.
