Dershowitz: Trump “Flexing Muscles” Selectively, Iran Policy And Credibility Seen As Key To Presidency

Prominent legal scholar Alan Dershowitz offered an analysis on “The Dershow” Wednesday of President Donald Trump’s approach to domestic and international issues, asserting that while Trump is “flexing his muscles” in certain arenas, his policy towards Iran and the broader maintenance of his credibility will be critical determinants of his presidency’s success.

Dershowitz observed that Trump is notably assertive regarding Russia and recent controversies at Harvard University, where he is “doubling down” on his stance.

However, he suggested Trump is “apparently not [flexing his muscles] on Iran” to the same degree, and also pointed to “some Congressional actions where I think he could probably do better.”

A significant portion of Dershowitz’s analysis focused on the implications of Trump’s handling of Iran, particularly in light of its nuclear ambitions.

“I think his presidency will be in some ways determined by how he deals with Iran if Iran manages to develop a nuclear weapon,” Dershowitz stated. He warned that if Trump fails to follow through on threats to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities and is perceived as “another Obama, his presidency will be very seriously diminished.”

This potential diminishment, according to Dershowitz, wouldn’t solely stem from the geopolitical fallout concerning Iran or Israel. “It will be because the key to his successes as a negotiator is his credibility, his willingness to carry out his threats,” he explained.

Dershowitz posited that this strategy of credible threat is currently effective in other areas.

“Obviously, that’s working, maybe working too much, but it’s working with Harvard. And it’s working, it certainly worked with some of the law firms that backed away,” he noted.

Conversely, a loss of such credibility would severely hamper Trump’s renowned deal-making abilities.

“If he loses his credibility, if he’s seen as somebody who threatens but doesn’t carry through his threats, it will be very hard for him to make the kinds of deals that he’s so good at making,” Dershowitz cautioned.

Describing Trump as “in general, very, very energetic and very enthusiastic,” Dershowitz concluded his assessment on a note of anticipation, remarking, “We’ll wait and see. He says, you know, we’ll know within a couple of weeks, and maybe, maybe we will.”
