The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has voted to void gun control activist David Hogg’s election as one of its vice chairs, citing procedural irregularities. The decision, made on Monday, stems from a challenge to the February election results filed by Kalyn Free, a Native American attorney who lost to Hogg.
The DNC’s credentials committee determined that the vice chair election, including Malcolm Kenyatta, did not adhere to proper parliamentary procedures. The committee will now bring the matter before the full body of DNC members, who will decide whether to call for a new election for both Hogg and Kenyatta’s vice chair positions.
Free’s challenge alleged that the election was “fatally flawed” and violated the DNC Charter, further claiming that it “discriminated against three women of color candidates,” as reported by Semafor.

In a statement released following the vote, Hogg expressed his concerns about the decision: “Today, the DNC took its first steps to remove me from my position as Vice Chair At-Large. While this vote was based on how the DNC conducted its officers’ elections, which I had nothing to do with, it is also impossible to ignore the broader context of my work to reform the party which loomed large over this vote.”
Hogg went on to criticize the Democratic Party’s current state, asserting, “Our country is in crisis, and too many leaders in the Democratic Party are asleep at the wheel. Trump is on a mission to crash our economy, disappear people without due process, and participate in flagrant public corruption – and voters still trust him more than Democrats. That is a massive indictment of our party.”
He further added, “I ran to be DNC Vice Chair to help make the Democratic Party better, not to defend an indefensible status quo that has caused voters in almost every demographic group to move away from us. The DNC has pledged to remove me, and this vote has provided an avenue to fast-track that effort.”

The credentials committee’s ruling comes on the heels of announcements by Leaders We Deserve, an organization co-founded by Hogg, regarding plans to invest $20 million in primary challenges against incumbent Democrats. This announcement generated significant intraparty backlash.
However, Christine Pelosi, a member of the credentials committee, sought to clarify that the decision to void the election was solely based on procedural irregularities.
“First, I want to say clearly and explicitly that this decision has nothing to do with the service of any DNC officer, especially [Hogg] or [Kenyatta],” Pelosi wrote in a post on X. “This is about a violation of parliamentary procedure that was raised in a challenge filed back in February by another candidate for Vice Chair.”
