House Speaker Mike Johnson today expressed “deep disappointment” with recent comments from tech mogul Elon Musk, who vehemently criticized the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill” as a “disgusting abomination.”
Johnson, addressing reporters, defended the comprehensive spending package, asserting that Musk was “terribly wrong” in his assessment despite what the Speaker described as a long and friendly conversation with the entrepreneur.
“It’s very disappointing,” Johnson stated, acknowledging his regard for Musk. “I’ve come to consider Elon a good friend. He’s obviously a very intelligent person, and he’s done a lot of great work.”

Johnson specifically lauded Musk’s past efforts, referencing “all the work they’ve done with DOGE and identifying fraud, waste, and abuse in the government,” an endeavor he called “a very important service that’s been performed.”
The Speaker added that the administration is currently in the process of codifying the findings from this initiative.
However, Johnson pivoted sharply to the core of their disagreement. “With all due respect, my friend Elon is terribly wrong about the one big, beautiful Bill!” He recounted a “long conversation yesterday,” stating they spoke for “more than 20 minutes on the telephone.”
During this call, Johnson claimed to have explained “all the virtues of the bill,” and that Musk “seemed to understand that.”

The Speaker elaborated on the bill’s alleged benefits, asserting it achieves “not only all of our priorities, all the promises we made on the campaign Trail, all the America First agenda wrapped into this legislation,” but also a “Massive tax cut” and a “massive reduction in spending, $1.6 trillion is the calculation.”
Musk, the former head of DOGE, ignited the controversy with a scathing critique of the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
Taking to social media, he declared, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

He further warned that the bill “will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America[n] citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”
Musk’s fiery remarks have added fuel to the debate surrounding the bill, which reportedly faces significant opposition within Republican ranks despite strong support from figures like JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon and President Donald Trump.
