SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A high-speed collision on US-301 in Sumter County Sunday evening resulted in the death of a Summerfield man and minor injuries to two Ocala residents. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the crash occurred shortly after 6:00 PM in the southbound lanes, just south of SE 180th Street.

According to FHP investigators, a 38-year-old Summerfield man, driving a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling southbound on US-301 at a high rate of speed. Ahead of him, also in the inside travel lane, was a Dodge Charger driven by a 51-year-old Ocala man, with his 51-year-old passenger.

The FHP preliminary report indicates that the Jetta attempted to overtake and pass the Charger. During this maneuver, the front left of the Jetta collided with the front right of the Charger.

The impact caused both vehicles to rotate into the center median. The Volkswagen Jetta overturned multiple times, ejecting its driver. The Summerfield man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Charger and his female passenger, both from Ocala, suffered minor injuries in the crash. Their identities have not been released.
