U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a decision on Tuesday to remove COVID-19 mRNA vaccines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommended immunization schedule for healthy children and pregnant women.
The announcement signals a significant shift in national public health policy, acknowledging growing concerns regarding the vaccines’ safety, necessity, and scientific underpinning for these demographics.
According to the Florida Department of Health (FDOH), the Sunshine State has been at the forefront of questioning the widespread use of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

In March 2022, at the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis and State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, Florida became the first state to officially recommend against these vaccinations for healthy children.
The state further solidified its position in January 2024 by recommending against the use of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for all populations, citing a commitment to data transparency, medical freedom, and parental rights over federal directives and pharmaceutical interests.
State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo hailed the federal government’s new direction.
“Florida has continually demanded honest science and accountability in our public health decisions,” said Dr. Ladapo. “Today’s federal action, thanks to the tireless efforts of Secretary Kennedy, is an important advancement for parents, physicians, and children across the country. Ultimately, scientific evidence dictates that the use of these products should end for all populations.”

According to the FDOH, the state’s recommendations have been shaped by accumulating data on adverse events, including myocarditis, alongside questions about the long-term efficacy and safety profile of the mRNA vaccines across all population groups.
The state has also advocated for increased scrutiny of pharmaceutical company influence on federal health guidelines and has independently convened experts to review these matters.
The removal of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine from the CDC’s pediatric and pregnancy schedules is being presented as a crucial first step.
