“I grew up in the VFWS, the American Legions. So, I knew the sacrifices that our veterans have made on behalf of us, and my dad had a track record of helping veterans. So, the first thing I did was I asked for the Veterans Committee in Congress,” he explained. His focus on healthcare stems from his commitment to ensuring access to quality, affordable care for his constituents.

A key component of Bilirakis’s effectiveness is his experienced staff. “Hire a good, experienced staff,” he advised, stressing the importance of both a skilled chief of staff and knowledgeable district staff for effective casework.

Bilirakis emphasized the importance of bipartisanship in advancing legislation. “My reputation is working with the other side,” he said. “Even when the Democrats control the House, I still was successful in getting legislation through.” He highlighted his ability to build trust and relationships with members of both parties.

“Listening to our constituents, we truly get the best ideas coming from the people,” he noted. He cited examples of legislation stemming directly from constituent concerns, such as expanding veterans’ benefits and improving healthcare access.

“I had to stand by my constituents, and I didn’t ask for any publicity whatsoever,” he said. This commitment to his district has earned him a reputation for integrity and principled decision-making.
Republican Study Committee
Bilirakis finds the Republican Study Committee to be very helpful in his legislative process.
“I think it’s very beneficial to be on the Republican Study Committee. We have a guest on a regular basis. Sometimes it will be a Cabinet member, but also, we have particular bills that are heard, and they ask for co-sponsorships. So, we pass the bill around, and if you agree with a particular bill, you sign the bill as a co-sponsor.”
Advice for Aspiring Lawmakers
Bilirakis encouraged college students to consider a career in public service. “It’s not easy, but it’s worth it,” he said. He advised them to pursue work they love and to prioritize serving their constituents.
