Florida Governor Ron DeSantis traveled to Ohio today at the invitation of U.S. Term Limits, advocating for the state’s legislature to pass a resolution calling for term limits on members of the U.S. Congress. DeSantis met with members of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate, urging them to join the growing number of states pushing for this constitutional reform.

The governor’s visit comes on the heels of Florida’s own passage of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 693 during the 2024 legislative session.

Florida is now among the twelve states that have successfully passed resolutions through both chambers of their legislatures, signaling a strong national push for congressional term limits.

“D.C. will never fix itself,” Governor DeSantis stated during his meetings with Ohio lawmakers. “Term limits will change the incentives for members of Congress from focusing on reelection to focusing on tangible accomplishments.”

The U.S. Constitution provides a mechanism for state legislatures to propose amendments without congressional approval. Specifically, Article V of the Constitution allows for a Convention of States when two-thirds of the 50 states pass resolutions calling for a particular amendment. The goal of U.S. Term Limits is to reach this threshold, triggering a convention to propose term limits on federal lawmakers.

Alongside Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin have passed resolutions in both chambers of their state legislatures. Several other states have resolutions pending or passed in a single chamber, indicating a burgeoning movement.

“The role of states in demanding accountability from Washington, D.C. is an important function,” said DeSantis.

The push for congressional term limits reflects a growing sentiment among many Americans who believe that long tenures in office contribute to political gridlock and a disconnect between lawmakers and their constituents.

The U.S. Term Limits organization and Governor DeSantis are hopeful that Ohio will join the growing coalition of states demanding change.
