Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office of Statewide Prosecution has filed charges against a convicted felon and registered sexual offender, Gerald Kight, for multiple counts of voter fraud in Putnam County. Kight is accused of illegally casting ballots in the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary, the 2024 Primary Election, and the 2024 General Election.

According to a press release from Attorney General Uthmeier’s office, Kight, who was convicted in 1999 of attempted lewd or lascivious assault upon a child and remains a registered sex offender as of March 2025, allegedly voted in the 2024 elections despite not having his voting rights restored.

“We must protect the sanctity and integrity of our republican form of government,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “This convicted felon, who is also a registered child sex offender, attempted multiple times to register to vote. After acknowledging twice that he wasn’t eligible, he lied on a subsequent voter registration application to participate in the 2024 election cycle unlawfully. Our Statewide Prosecutors will ensure he is held accountable.”

The investigation was initiated in November 2024 when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement received a complaint from the Florida Department of State, Office of Election Crimes and Security. The complaint alleged that Kight knowingly participated in the three 2024 elections as a convicted felon without restored rights.

Investigators found that Kight attempted to register to vote at least twice since 2022. On both occasions, he received notice that he was not eligible and acknowledged that the information was correct. However, in 2023, Kight allegedly submitted a voter registration form falsely claiming eligibility and subsequently voted in the 2024 elections.

Kight faces three counts of unqualified elector willfully voting and one count of false affirmation in connection with voting or elections. All charges are third-degree felonies.

Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Sophia Birriel-Sanchez will prosecute the case in Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit. Attorney General Uthmeier extended his thanks to Secretary Cord Byrd and Brad McVey for their contributions to Florida’s election integrity efforts.
