Michael Hall, 24, who repeatedly declared “I was insane!” during court appearances, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother, 53-year-old Sherri Hall.

The sentencing comes four years after the brutal crime that occurred on March 16, 2021.

Hall was scheduled to stand trial on May 9, but opted to enter a guilty plea just before jury selection was set to begin. The charge stemmed from an altercation with his mother over paperwork, which escalated tragically.

According to the arrest report, Palm Springs police responded to a call regarding a deceased woman at a local apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered Sherri Hall’s body, bearing horrific injuries including “multiple blunt injuries to her head, face, and other parts of her body,” and covered in blood.

Neighbors provided crucial testimony to investigators. One reported seeing Michael Hall pacing outside the residence that morning with blood on his hands. Another neighbor described his behavior as “suspicious” enough to prompt her to alert her husband.

Further details from the arrest report revealed that police had encountered Michael Hall earlier that day at a convenience store following a welfare check request from a store clerk. Despite visible injuries, Hall provided a false name, “Jake Jones,” and refused medical assistance. He was later taken to a hospital for evaluation, where additional injuries consistent with a violent struggle were discovered.

The medical examiner’s report detailed the extent of the trauma inflicted upon Sherri Hall, stating the cause of death as blunt trauma to the head and neck compression. The report noted “severe” trauma to her face, a partially detached ear, a broken arm, and “obvious signs of great trauma” across her body.

Hall’s defense team argued that their client “freaked out” during a discussion about title paperwork with his mother, who allegedly screamed at him and demanded he leave their shared home. They contended that Hall “lost control and snapped” in response. While Hall claimed his mother physically assaulted him first, his defense conceded that he lacked the “fully formed conscious purpose to kill,” suggesting an “impulsive overreaction.”

Public defenders had also attempted to argue that Hall experienced an acute psychotic break, leading to a period in 2023 when he was deemed unfit to stand trial. However, this ruling was eventually overturned.

Despite his claims of insanity, Michael Hall ultimately confessed to the murder of his mother, according to the arrest report. With the guilty plea to second-degree murder, he has now been sentenced to 35 years behind bars, receiving credit for the four years he has already spent in custody since his arrest.
