Florida Summer Turkey Survey Underway: Your Reports Matter

Report all wild turkey sightings from now until Aug. 31
Report all wild turkey sightings from now until Aug. 31

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is urging residents and visitors across the Sunshine State to become citizen scientists this summer by reporting all wild turkey sightings. From now until August 31st, every glimpse of a hen, poult (newly hatched turkey), or gobbler can provide crucial data for wildlife management.

This annual summer wild turkey survey is a key component of a larger multi-state effort designed to gain a deeper understanding of wild turkey reproductive success and overall abundance.

The information gathered directly assists FWC biologists in determining nesting success rates, poult survival, and the distribution and density of turkey populations. This data is invaluable for developing strategies to manage and sustain healthy wild turkey populations for future generations.

Wild turkeys are a common sight throughout Florida, with nests typically hatching from late spring into the summer months.

However, the success of these nests can fluctuate annually due to a variety of factors including weather patterns, predation, and the quality of their habitat. These variations in nesting success and poult survival can significantly impact wild turkey populations.

By participating in this survey and reporting sightings, Floridians and visitors directly contribute to the FWC’s ability to estimate vital population metrics at both statewide and regional levels. The FWC encourages everyone to keep an eye out for these magnificent birds and contribute to their ongoing conservation efforts.
