The subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect, Latrance Battle, approached the victim at her workplace and identified herself as an “ICE” agent. Battle was reportedly wearing a black shirt with the letters “ICE” printed on the front, presented what appeared to be a Sheriff’s Office business card, and carried a hand-held radio.
Fearing for her safety and believing Battle to be a legitimate ICE agent, the victim complied with instructions to accompany Battle. The victim, who is reportedly in the process of becoming a legal United States resident, stated that she genuinely believed Battle’s claims at the time.
While traveling in the vehicle, Battle allegedly forcefully snatched the victim’s phone as she attempted to contact her lawyer and husband.
