Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his personal office announced Sunday. The diagnosis follows recent medical evaluations prompted by increasing urinary symptoms.

According to the statement released, Biden received the diagnosis on Friday, revealing “a more aggressive form of the disease” that has metastasized to the bone. The statement specified that the cancer is characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5).

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement read.

However, the statement also offered a degree of optimism, noting that the cancer appears to be “hormone-sensitive,” which allows for effective management. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement continued. “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

The news comes amidst renewed discussions regarding Biden’s health, particularly in the lead-up to the release of a forthcoming book, “Original Sin,” by CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson. This book is expected to include information related to Biden’s physical and mental health.

The Gleason score is used to grade prostate cancer tissue. A higher Gleason score indicates a more aggressive form of cancer. The information that the cancer is hormone sensitive is important, because that allows for certain types of hormone therapy to be effective in treatments.
