As tensions escalate in the Middle East, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took to social media on Monday to urge prayers for American troops and the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire in Israel and Iran.

Her remarks, emphasizing a strong “America First” stance, coincide with a bipartisan push in Congress to prevent direct U.S. involvement in any escalating conflict between the two nations.

“Pray for our troops,” Greene wrote on X. “Pray for the innocent people in Israel and Iran.” She continued, underscoring her point, “War has bad consequences.”

Greene’s comments align with a growing sentiment in Congress for restraint. On Monday evening, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced his intention to introduce a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing direct American involvement.

The resolution, set to be introduced today, has garnered immediate and notable support from across the political spectrum, including prominent progressive Democrats like Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).

“This is not our war,” Massie declared in a post on X, emphasizing the constitutional prerogative of Congress to decide matters of war. “But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution.”

The swift backing for Massie’s initiative underscores a growing desire in Congress for a reassertion of legislative authority on matters of war and peace. Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) quickly affirmed his support, stating, “I am proud to co-lead this bipartisan War Powers Resolution with Rep. Massie that is privileged and must receive a vote.”

The resolution seeks to invoke the War Powers Act of 1973, which requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and prohibits armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days without congressional authorization or a declaration of war.

Greene, known for her strong anti-war sentiment, further elaborated on her “America First” philosophy. “We voted for America First,” she stated. The day prior, she had drawn a clear line, asserting that people were now “finding out who are real America First/MAGA and who were fake and just said it bc it was popular.”

“Anyone slobbering for the U.S. to become fully involved in the Israel/Iran war is not America First/MAGA,” Greene declared. She condemned the notion of wishing harm upon civilians, stating that “wishing for murder of innocent people is disgusting” and expressing widespread weariness with foreign entanglements. “We are sick and tired of foreign wars.”

Representatives Ocasio-Cortez and Tlaib publicly committed to supporting Massie’s resolution.

“Signing on,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in response to Massie’s post. Tlaib echoed this sentiment, stating, “I look forward to supporting this War Powers Resolution. The American people aren’t falling for it again. We were lied to about ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in Iraq that killed millions + forever changed lives. It’s unconst’l for Trump to go to war without a vote in Congress.” Tlaib’s reference to the Iraq War highlights a shared apprehension among some members about the potential for unauthorized military interventions.

Greene concluded her earlier remarks by reiterating the core tenets of her “America First/MAGA” ideology, advocating for global peace and highlighting the devastating human and financial cost of prolonged military interventions.

“Real America First/MAGA wants world peace for all people and doesn’t want our military killed and forever injured physically and mentally,” Greene wrote. She grimly recounted the heavy toll of past conflicts, stating, “We have spent TRILLIONS in the Middle East and we have dealt with the aftermath of death, blown apart bodies, never ending suicides, and disabling PTSD.”

The bipartisan nature of Massie’s resolution suggests a potential for significant debate and a test of congressional power in shaping U.S. foreign policy.

With the resolution being “privileged,” it is expected to receive a floor vote, forcing members to take a clear stance on potential American involvement in a conflict between Israel and Iran, echoing the sentiments expressed by Representative Greene for peace and caution against foreign entanglements.
