The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a new initiative today that offers to forgive potentially massive civil fines for undocumented immigrants who choose to self-deport using the CBP Home mobile application.
This move, coupled with a $1,000 exit stipend and free travel, aims to incentivize voluntary departure from the United States.
Under current regulations, individuals who remain in the U.S. after receiving a final deportation order can face fines of nearly $1,000 per day. DHS revealed that it has already issued over 9,000 such fine notices, totaling almost $3 billion. The new policy, effective June 9, 2025, will waive these penalties for those who coordinate their departure through the CBP Home app.

“If you are here illegally, use the CBP Home App to take control of your departure and receive financial support to return home,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in a statement. “If you don’t, you will be subjected to fines, arrest, deportation and will never be allowed to return. If you are in this country illegally, self-deport NOW and preserve your opportunity to potentially return the legal, right way.”
In addition to the fine forgiveness, individuals who use the app to self-deport are eligible for cost-free travel to their home country and will receive a $1,000 exit bonus upon confirmation of their departure through the app.
DHS has also updated the CBP Home Mobile App to streamline the self-deportation process, making it more user-friendly.

The department is promoting self-deportation as the “safest and most cost-efficient way to leave the U.S.,” emphasizing that it allows individuals to manage their own departure and may preserve their eligibility for future legal immigration.
The CBP Home app is available for download on Apple and Android devices through their respective app stores and directly from the DHS website. For more information, individuals can visit DHS.gov/CBPhome.
