Governor Ron DeSantis has officially inaugurated the Kermit H. Lewin Stock Island Reverse Osmosis Facility, a new seawater desalination plant aimed at securing a reliable drinking water supply for Key West and the Lower Florida Keys during emergencies. The $47 million project, unveiled today, marks a significant step in bolstering the region’s infrastructure and disaster resilience.

The facility, funded through a $30.7 million grant from the Florida Department of Commerce’s Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program, with the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority contributing the remaining funds, is designed to provide clean drinking water when the primary pipeline from Florida City is compromised.

“I was in the Florida Keys to announce the opening of the Kermit H. Lewin Stock Island Reverse Osmosis Facility, a new state-of-the-art seawater desalination plant that will produce clean drinking water for Key West and the Lower Keys,” stated Governor DeSantis. “Since 2019, we’ve committed over $80 million to water quality and infrastructure in the Florida Keys—with more to come.”

The new plant replaces a previous facility that suffered damage during Hurricane Irma. It boasts enhanced storm-resilient features, including elevated construction and hardened materials, ensuring it can withstand future severe weather events. While not intended for daily operation, the facility will be activated during emergencies or periods of peak demand, guaranteeing continuous water service.

This project is part of a larger state initiative to strengthen infrastructure and protect water quality in the Florida Keys. Last month, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection allocated over $9 million through the Florida Keys Area of Critical State Concern Grant Program for wastewater treatment upgrades, canal restoration, and stormwater improvements.

The DeSantis administration has emphasized its commitment to the region, having directed over $80 million since 2019 towards critical infrastructure and water quality projects in the Keys.

The opening of the Kermit H. Lewin Stock Island Reverse Osmosis Facility represents a significant milestone in these ongoing efforts, providing residents with a crucial safeguard against water supply disruptions during emergencies.
