TAMPA, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on the 7500 block of Carlton Circle in Tampa. The incident stemmed from a complex domestic dispute involving a grandmother, her daughter, a grandchild, and a roommate.

Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer provided a detailed timeline of events at a press conference held Sunday morning. “Before I get started in the timeline, this was a very complicated call for service, a complicated scene,” Maurer stated, outlining the individuals involved: the grandmother (suspect), the daughter (victim), a grandchild, and a roommate.

The HCSO received a call reporting a burglary in progress at the residence at approximately 4:41 a.m. Multiple deputies responded to the scene. Upon arrival, deputies learned that the suspect, the grandmother, had shot her daughter in the hand.

As deputies began to make contact and call people out of the residence, the roommate exited the home with the child, both of whom were safely secured by deputies.

Deputies then entered the front door, issuing multiple commands for everyone to come out. Two separate teams were formed. One team successfully rescued the victim, the daughter, who had a gunshot wound to her hand. According to Chief Deputy Maurer, she appeared to be under the influence of some substance, “very lethargic, and couldn’t keep her balance,” possibly due to something the suspect had asked her to drink.

The second team cleared the rest of the house, locating the suspect barricaded in a locked back room. Deputies made contact with the locked room and issued multiple commands for the suspect to open the door and make herself known.

When deputies breached the door, they found the grandmother armed with a firearm in her right hand. Deputies issued multiple commands to drop the firearm. “She raises the firearm and our Deputy fires and neutralizes a threat,” Chief Deputy Maurer reported.

This happened at approximately 5:05 a.m.

The deputy involved in the shooting has six years of service with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, preceded by prior service with the Temple Terrace Police Department. He has no prior use of deadly force.

Maurer conveyed Sheriff Chad Chronister’s emphasis on violent crime as the agency’s top priority, specifically highlighting the domestic violence aspect of this incident.

“Domestic violence is the monster in everyone’s home. We cannot police in your homes if you have domestic violence issues, or you need support and assistance,” Maurer urged.

He encouraged individuals facing domestic violence to contact The Spring of Tampa Bay or the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. He also stressed the importance of mental health support, directing those battling mental illness to the Crisis Center of Tampa.

Maurer commended the deputies on scene for their “outstanding job,” noting that they successfully rescued three people from a violent situation.
