Hernando County Drivers Brace For Cortez Boulevard Lane Closures Next Week

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – Motorists in Hernando County, particularly those who travel along US 98/SR 50 (Cortez Boulevard), should prepare for a series of lane closures and potential traffic delays beginning Sunday, May 11th.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced several road work projects, including one significant ongoing closure impacting a key intersection.

A major disruption continues at the SR 50 (Cortez Blvd.) / SR 50 A (W Jefferson Street) / Cobb Road intersection. One lane remains closed in each direction approaching and through this busy intersection 24 hours a day. This long-term closure is expected to continue through approximately May 2025.

Additional lane closures and traffic operations are scheduled for next week:

  • US 98 / SR 50 (Cortez Blvd.) from east of Mondon Hill Rd / Spring Lake Highway to Lockhart Road:
    • Daytime lane closures: Monday, May 12 through Saturday, May 17, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • SR 50 Bypass (Cortez Blvd.) from north of the Cobb Road/Cortez Blvd./Jefferson Street intersection to Buck Hope Road:
    • Southbound daytime lane closures: Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • SR 50 Bypass (Cortez Blvd.) through the Cobb Road/Cortez Blvd./Jefferson Street intersection:
    • Lane closures/flagging operations: Sunday, May 11, from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday, May 12.
  • SR 50 (Cortez Blvd) from Ridge Manor Boulevard to Riverland Clay Sink Road:
    • Daytime periodic flagging and brief traffic stops: Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Nighttime periodic flagging and brief traffic stops: Sunday, May 11 through Thursday, May 15, nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

FDOT advises all motorists to exercise extreme caution when traveling through these work zones, be mindful of construction crews and equipment, and allow for extra travel time. Drivers are encouraged to consider alternative routes where possible.
