HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – With summer and the peak of swimming season fast approaching, Hillsborough County, in collaboration with the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City, and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, is launching “Safe Pools Day Tampa Bay 2025.”

The initiative aims to highlight crucial safety measures to protect both children and adults in and around swimming pools.

The official launch event is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Loretta Ingraham Center and Pool, located at 1611 N. Hubert Ave., Tampa, FL 33607.

As part of this effort, code enforcement officers from each participating jurisdiction will conduct safety inspections at condominiums, subdivisions, townhouses, apartment complexes, and other common-area pools on May 23rd.

These inspections will ensure compliance with safety standards outlined in the Hillsborough County Code, including proper fencing, clear signage, secure drain covers, and appropriate sanitation. While violations can lead to citations and fines, officials emphasize that the primary goal is education and encouraging voluntary compliance to create safer swimming environments.

May is recognized as Water Safety Month, and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County will be actively involved in providing valuable water safety tips to prevent pool-related injuries and drownings. This is particularly critical as Florida unfortunately leads the nation in drowning deaths of children aged four and younger, with most of these tragic incidents being preventable.

Furthermore, with the 2025 hurricane season commencing on June 1st, the Children’s Board is urging parents and caregivers to incorporate pool safety into their hurricane preparedness plans. This is especially important for families who may need to evacuate to a location with a swimming pool.

The “Safe Pools Day Tampa Bay” initiative underscores a collective commitment to enhancing pool safety throughout the region, ensuring that residents can enjoy a safe and enjoyable swimming season.
