Homestead Pair Charged With Resisting Arrest, DUI After Traffic Stop On U.S. 1

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Two individuals from Homestead, Florida, were arrested early Tuesday morning on U.S. 1 following a traffic stop and subsequent DUI investigation. Both face charges of resisting arrest, while the driver was also charged with driving under the influence.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a Honda sedan was stopped near Mile Marker 106 at approximately 1:04 a.m. The stop was initiated because the vehicle allegedly failed to maintain its lane and was suspected of having illegally dark window tint.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Matthew Johnathan Malphrus, was subsequently arrested for DUI. Authorities reported that Malphrus became argumentative and combative following his arrest and allegedly had to be restrained after attempting to kick a Deputy.

The passenger, identified as 34-year-old Roxanna Martinez, repeatedly attempted to interfere with Deputies during the incident and refused to follow instructions.

Both Malphrus and Martinez were taken into custody and transported to jail. Malphrus was charged with DUI and resisting arrest, while Martinez was charged with resisting arrest.
