An illegal immigrant residing in St. Clair County, Alabama, has been sentenced to 39 months in prison on multiple drug trafficking charges, announced U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona. Claudia Montano Gonzalez, 43, a Mexican citizen, received the sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Corey L. Maze.
In October 2024, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, distribution of fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

According to court documents and her plea agreement, Gonzalez was involved in the sale of fentanyl in October 2023. The transaction took place at the Buc-ee’s travel center in Leeds, Alabama, where Gonzalez personally delivered the illicit drugs.
Her husband and co-defendant, David Angel Alejandres, is alleged to have facilitated the transaction remotely from Mexico.
Following the drug deal, law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at Gonzalez’s residence in Pell City, where they recovered approximately one kilogram of fentanyl.

David Angel Alejandres was charged in June 2024 with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, distribution of fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. He remains at large.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is investigating this case with assistance from the Pell City Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany T. Byrd is prosecuting the case for the government.
