Inmate Dies After Medical Distress At Falkenburg Road Jail: Hillsborough County Sheriff

TAMPA, Fla. – An inmate from Falkenburg Road Jail, 71-year-old John Esler, passed away yesterday afternoon at Tampa General Hospital after being found in medical distress in his cell.

According to officials, Esler was discovered in his cell at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025. He was immediately transported to the jail’s medical unit, where staff determined his condition warranted transport to Tampa General Hospital.

Esler’s condition reportedly worsened throughout the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2025. He was pronounced deceased shortly after 3:23 p.m.

The official cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Esler’s next of kin has been notified.
