TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. – An early morning water rescue unfolded near the Treasure Island Causeway bascule bridge today after an adult male fell approximately 20 feet into the water, sustaining a head injury. The man, whose injuries are reported as non-life-threatening, was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The incident began shortly after midnight when Treasure Island Fire Rescue, Treasure Island Police Department, and emergency crews from neighboring jurisdictions responded to a 911 call reporting a person yelling for help near the east side of the bridge.

Upon arrival, a rescue boat from St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue quickly located the individual in the water. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue paramedics provided immediate treatment on the scene, and Sunstar then transported the man to the hospital.

According to authorities, the man had approached the bridge, which was closed for overnight repairs, to watch the ongoing work when he fell. Crews performing maintenance on the bridge were inside the primary operations area and did not witness the fall.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue used the opportunity to remind the public about the importance of safety near construction zones.

“Treasure Island Fire Rescue reminds all residents and visitors to avoid restricted construction areas for their safety,” a statement from the department emphasized.
