MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A 39-year-old Marathon man was arrested Thursday after allegedly causing a disturbance at Fishermen’s Hospital, leading to charges including battery on a law enforcement officer.
Elson Joseph Stuart faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest following the incident.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called to the hospital at approximately 9:56 a.m. in response to reports of a disruptive patient. According to authorities, Stuart was reportedly yelling, cursing, and at one point, pulled an intravenous needle from his arm.

Deputies on scene attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Stuart’s behavior fluctuated between periods of calm and aggression.
The situation escalated when Stuart allegedly pushed a Deputy out of his room and attempted to slam the door shut. He then reportedly grabbed, pulled, lunged at, and resisted Deputies as they attempted to take him into custody.
To gain control of the situation, law enforcement officers deployed a Taser on Stuart. Following the deployment, Stuart was medically cleared at the hospital before being transported to jail.
