Americans on the road this Memorial Day weekend can expect significantly lower prices at the gas pump than in recent years.

According to GasBuddy, a platform that tracks fuel prices, the national average is projected to be $3.08 per gallon. This figure is down from last year’s $3.58 average and marks the lowest price for the holiday weekend since 2021.

GasBuddy statistics further indicate that when adjusted for inflation and excluding the pandemic-driven market disruptions of 2020, this Memorial Day weekend is set to offer the cheapest gasoline in over two decades.

The Trump administration is attributing this price drop to its energy policies. “President Trump has kept another promise to quickly lower energy prices by unleashing the liquid gold under our feet,” said White House assistant press secretary Taylor Rogers in a statement. “The proof is in the prices: adjusted for inflation, it’s the second-cheapest price for a gallon of gas on Memorial Day since 2003. Biden’s radical climate policies stifled holiday travel, but Americans will finally see low gas prices this Memorial Day Weekend.”

Upon returning to the White House, President Trump declared a national energy emergency, emphasizing the “immediate and pressing priority” of expanding the nation’s energy infrastructure for national and economic security.

During a Friday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed these sentiments, stating that lower gas prices are “because of the president’s energy policies.”

The current administration’s stance contrasts sharply with the energy policies of former President Joe Biden. During his term, gas prices rose, hitting a record national average above $5 per gallon in June 2022.

The provided information highlights several actions under the Biden administration intended to curb oil production, including a January 2021 executive order banning new oil and gas leasing on federal lands, the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline, and a ban on new offshore oil and gas activity across 625 million acres of federal waters.

Looking ahead, GasBuddy forecasts that fuel prices will likely remain relatively low throughout the summer, typically the peak driving season.

The average per-gallon cost from Memorial Day through Labor Day this year is expected to be approximately $3.02, with some projections suggesting prices could even dip below $3 per gallon later in the season.
