Michigan Representative Shri Thanedar, a Democrat, has ceased his attempt to compel a House vote on his impeachment resolution targeting the President. This decision followed significant pressure from within the Democratic Party for him to withdraw the effort.
Representative Thanedar, currently serving his second term and facing a primary challenge from the left, had introduced a privileged resolution on Tuesday. This maneuver would have necessitated a House vote on seven articles of impeachment against the president.
However, by Wednesday, Thanedar yielded to pressure from House Democratic leadership and opted not to trigger the vote. This development comes as Democrats largely view his impeachment initiative as a diversion from their unified opposition to the president’s “one big, beautiful bill.”

“After talking with many colleagues, I have decided not to force a vote on impeachment today,” Thanedar announced on X Wednesday afternoon. “Instead, I will add to my articles of impeachment and continue to rally the support of both Democrats and Republicans to defend the Constitution with me.”
House Democratic Conference chair Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking House Democrat, publicly criticized Thanedar’s impeachment push during his weekly news conference on Wednesday.
“Our focus is on health care being stripped away from the American people,” Aguilar stated. “That is the most urgent and dire thing that we could be talking about this week. Everything else is a distraction.”

Numerous House Democrats also privately expressed their disapproval of Thanedar’s actions to reporters.
One lawmaker, speaking anonymously to Axios, labeled it “the dumbest fucking thing. Utterly selfish behavior.” Another House Democrat told the outlet that the anticipated impeachment vote was “a waste of fucking time.”
Despite backing down from forcing an immediate vote, Thanedar did not rule out the possibility of bringing his impeachment resolution to the floor at a future date.
