Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has publicly criticized the Democratic Party’s approach to the recent protests in Los Angeles, arguing that the party’s focus on condemning violence inadvertently aids the opposition.
In a series of posts on the social media platform Bluesky, AOC asserted that Democrats do not need to “answer for every teen who throws a rock,” and that shifting the narrative away from the Trump administration’s actions is “100% carrying water for the opposition.”

The New York lawmaker’s comments come amidst ongoing protests and anti-ICE violence in Los Angeles. While many Democratic colleagues have sought to balance support for the protests with a condemnation of violent acts, Ocasio-Cortez has taken a more confrontational stance, directly challenging the perceived need for Democrats to disavow every instance of unrest.

“It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. She further emphasized, “They are in charge.”

The congresswoman attributed the escalation of tensions to the Trump administration’s actions, specifically citing what she described as “violent raids without grounds in elementary schools, shopping areas, and peaceful public spaces.”
She also accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of illegally obstructing Members of Congress from entering facilities where individuals were allegedly being detained, further escalating the situation. “Let’s start there,” she urged.
Ocasio-Cortez’s admonishment highlights a growing ideological divide within the Democratic Party regarding how to address the intersection of protest, civil disobedience, and instances of violence.

As Republicans place the spotlight on the disruptive and violent aspects of the protests, Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks highlight that she believes the core issue remains the accountability of the current administration for its policies and their perceived impact on public order.
