PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Pinellas County residents looking to safely dispose of old tires can take advantage of a free collection event happening this Saturday, April 19th. The county is hosting the event at three locations from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as part of its efforts to control mosquito populations.
The event is a collaborative effort between Pinellas County Mosquito Control and Pinellas County Solid Waste. Discarded tires left outdoors are notorious for collecting standing water, providing ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Officials note that a single scrap tire can facilitate the breeding of thousands of mosquitoes throughout a season, contributing to the potential spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.

The free tire collection will take place at the following locations:
- HHW North: 29582 U.S. Highway 19 N., Clearwater
- Walsingham Park: 12615 102nd Ave., Seminole
- Lealman Exchange: 5175 45th Street N., St. Petersburg
This event is exclusively for Pinellas County residents. A government-issued ID will be required at drop-off locations to verify residency. The county will not accept tires from businesses.
Residents can bring up to 12 tires per household. Accepted tires must be 36 inches or less in diameter, and importantly, tires with rims attached will not be accepted.
Tires collected during the event will be transported to Pinellas County Solid Waste’s Waste-to-Energy facility. There, they will be processed to generate electricity, helping to power approximately 45,000 homes daily. Any metal components from the tires will be recovered from the remaining ash and recycled.
For more information about the tire disposal event or concerning mosquitoes in Pinellas County, residents can contact Pinellas County Mosquito Control at (727) 464-7503 or visit pinellas.gov/mosquito.
Those unable to attend the Saturday event can explore year-round tire disposal options by using the “Where Does It Go?” Search Tool available on the county’s website at Pinellas.gov/where.
