Pro-Life Leaders Urge New D.C. Attorney To Investigate 2022 Discovery Of Fetal Remains

A coalition of prominent pro-life advocacy groups today sent a letter to Jeanine Pirro, the newly appointed Interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, urging her to launch a full investigation into the March 2022 discovery of over 100 aborted fetuses, including five that raised concerns of possible infanticide.

The remains were found by activists with the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) in toxic waste containers originating from the Washington Surgi-Clinic. The condition of five of these fetuses, some described as nearly full-term, led to allegations of potential violations of federal laws, including the Partial-Birth Abortion Act and the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act.

“The horrific wounds on the bodies of these innocent children — some who were nearly full-term, and all may have been able to survive outside the womb — indicate destructive violations of federal law,” Live Action President Lila Rose had previously stated to the DCNF regarding the discovery.

The letter to Interim U.S. Attorney Pirro, signed by leaders from organizations including Advancing American Freedom, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Students for Life of America, Concerned Women for America, Family Research Council, Live Action, Human Coalition, and Catholic Vote, highlights what they describe as a failure by the previous administration to properly address the findings.

“Tragically, rather than investigate the incident properly, the Biden Administration worked to sweep the allegations under the rug and silence the individuals involved by prosecuting them,” the letter states. It further references accusations that President Biden’s Department of Justice ordered Washington, D.C., officials to incinerate the fetal remains. This action was reportedly prevented due to pressure from Republican members of Congress, who have consistently called for a thorough investigation throughout Biden’s presidency.

The letter also notes the legal trajectory of PAAU leader Lauren Handy. After speaking out about the five particularly concerning abortions, Handy and others were charged by the Biden DOJ in March 2022 over a 2020 protest at the clinic. Handy was subsequently sentenced to 57 months in prison under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act but was pardoned by President Donald Trump in January of this year along with several other pro-life protesters.

Congratulating Pirro on her recent appointment, the pro-life leaders emphasized her new role in upholding federal law. “As the Interim United States Attorney for Washington, D.C., it is your responsibility to follow the facts where they may lead and enforce federal law to protect those most vulnerable in our nation’s capital: the unborn,” the groups urged. They respectfully requested a “proper investigation into the suspected violations of the Partial-Birth Abortion Act and the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act in connection with the D.C. Five.”

The office of the Interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia has yet to issue a public response to the letter.
