TAMPA, Fla – A potentially devastating incident was averted Sunday night thanks to the swift and courageous actions of security guards at a Ybor City cigar lounge and the rapid response of Tampa Police officers.

A Tampa woman, identified as 38-year-old Bernida Smith, was arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot patrons and then returning to the establishment armed with a shotgun.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at a cigar lounge located on the 1700 block of E 7th Avenue.

According to witnesses, Smith asked to leave the premises after security guards said she had brought unauthorized liquor inside. While resisting ejection, Smith reportedly threatened to return and shoot patrons at the lounge.

Minutes later, Smith made good on her threat, parking her vehicle directly in front of the lounge and approaching the entrance armed with a shotgun. Fortunately, two quick-thinking security guards, employed by the lounge, were able to disarm Smith before she could inflict any harm.

Officers from the Tampa Police Department, who were patrolling in the immediate area, quickly responded and arrested Smith without further incident.

A subsequent search of Smith and her vehicle by officers revealed two additional firearms.

Smith now faces serious charges, including two felony counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, one felony count of Shooting at within or into a Building, and one misdemeanor count of Improper Exhibition of a Dangerous Weapon or Firearm. She is currently being held in custody.
