The clock is ticking. As of tomorrow, May 7, 2025, the full enforcement of the REAL ID Act goes into effect. This means individuals will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another federally acceptable form of identification, to board federally regulated commercial aircraft, access certain federal facilities, and enter nuclear power plants.
For many travelers and those needing access to federal buildings, tomorrow is the critical date by which their primary form of identification must meet the enhanced security standards mandated by the REAL ID Act.

While federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), have explored the future of identification, including the potential integration of mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs), the immediate requirement for tomorrow’s deadline centers on currently approved forms of identification.
A 2021 request for information (RFI) released by DHS and TSA highlighted interest in mobile driver’s licenses as a digital representation of physical licenses, potentially offering enhanced security, privacy, and touchless verification benefits. This RFI sought input from stakeholders on technical standards and best practices to inform future rulemaking that could eventually allow mDLs to be accepted for REAL ID purposes.
However, while the development of mDL technology continues and some states may have operational programs, widespread acceptance for federal purposes under the REAL ID Act tomorrow is not the standard. The infrastructure and regulatory framework for universal mDL acceptance at federal checkpoints are still evolving.
Today’s urgent message is to ensure you have a physical REAL ID-compliant card – typically marked with a star – or an alternative acceptable document such as a valid passport. Travelers arriving at airports or individuals needing access to federal facilities starting tomorrow without proper identification will face potential difficulties.

Officials urge anyone unsure about their identification to confirm their state-issued card is REAL ID compliant or to gather necessary alternative documents today.
Information and resources are available through state motor vehicle agencies and the official TSA website to help individuals understand the requirements and prepare for the deadline taking effect tomorrow, May 7, 2025.
