Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly of Virginia passed away Wednesday at the age of 75, his family announced, marking the end of a distinguished career in public service. The veteran lawmaker died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Connolly’s passing comes just weeks after he shared the difficult news that his cancer had returned, prompting his decision not to seek reelection in 2026 and to step down as the top Democrat on the influential House Oversight Committee.

In a statement released Wednesday, Connolly’s family shared their grief: “It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family.”
A dedicated public servant, Connolly represented Virginia’s 11th congressional district, serving since 2009. Prior to his time in Congress, he held various local government positions, including chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Throughout his career, he was known for his commitment to his constituents and his work on issues ranging from federal workforce matters to national security.
Details regarding memorial services are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. Connolly’s death leaves a vacancy in Virginia’s 11th congressional district, and a special election will be called to fill the seat.
