U.S. Border Patrol has announced the dismantling of a soft-sided migrant processing facility in the San Diego Sector, citing a more than 96% decline in illegal border crossings in the area. The facility was originally constructed under the Biden Administration.

Officials attribute the significant decrease in crossings to heightened border enforcement measures implemented by the Trump Administration. These efforts reportedly include a nationwide focus on arresting undocumented immigrants with criminal records.

Alongside the announcement of the facility’s closure, Border Patrol highlighted several recent arrests of undocumented individuals with criminal histories across the country.

These included:

  • Kevin Estuarde Hernandez (18, Guatemala): Arrested in Boston, suspected 18th Street Gang member allegedly involved in a gang-related shooting.
  • Jose Antonio Deras (45, El Salvador): Arrested in Denver, facing four felony counts of sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse. A judge had previously ordered his removal in 2009.
  • Eduardo Sanchez-Hernandez (32, Mexico): Arrested in Newark, with pending charges for sexual assault of a minor under 13.
  • Litzy Janel Saavedra (26, Mexico): Arrested in New York City, with a conviction for third-degree felony rape.
  • Carlos Torres Valdovinos (46, Mexico): Arrested in San Francisco, with a conviction for felony oral copulation of a child.
  • Jose Barrios-Bello (35, Mexico): Arrested in Salt Lake City, with a conviction for distribution of methamphetamine. He had been previously removed from the country.
  • Misael Delgado-Carlos (35, Mexico): Arrested in Houston, with a conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. This individual had also been previously removed.

Further details on the specific enforcement strategies contributing to the reported drop in crossings in the San Diego Sector were not immediately provided.

The dismantling of the processing facility is presented as a direct consequence of the reduced number of individuals encountering Border Patrol in this region.
