Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed deep concern on CNN’s “State of the Union” regarding President Trump’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, fearing the president may “capitulate “cave” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Schumer’s comments followed a meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which both sides described as “productive.”

Trump later criticized Putin’s attacks on Ukraine, suggesting Putin might be “stringing him along” and requiring a different approach.

During the interview with host Dana Bash, Schumer, a member of the “Gang of Eight” who receives intelligence briefings on the war, articulated his apprehension.

“My great fear, Dana, is that Trump will just cave into Putin. That’s been the overall indication all along,” Schumer said. He outlined three critical concerns should Trump abandon Ukraine.

Schumer argued it would be a “moral tragedy” to abandon Ukraine after its significant sacrifices and the unified Western support against Putin.

“To just abandon Ukraine, after all the sacrifice they made, after so much loss of life, and with the rallying of the whole West against Putin, it would just be a moral tragedy to undercut Zelensky, which we, I believe, Trump is headed in that direction,” Schumer stated.

He warned that such a move would severely damage U.S. alliances with European nations. “The Europeans have stood up for us. The whole West has stood up for us. They put in money, they’ve used all kinds of diplomatic and economic tools to back us, and how is Europe going to trust us ever again if Trump backs out?” he questioned.

What Schumer considered “worst of all,” he argued, was that it would project an image of U.S. weakness to global adversaries. “It sends a signal to every dictator in China, in North Korea, in Iran, that if you stand up and bully Trump, you’re going to get your way,” he warned.

While Schumer expressed deep concern about a potential “cave” to Putin, the Trump administration has not signaled any such intention, and Schumer’s remarks remain speculative.
