TAMPA, Fla. – With Memorial Day weekend just hours away, the Tampa Police Department is rolling out “Operation Zero Proof,” a heightened enforcement initiative aimed at preventing impaired driving and boating. Starting Friday, May 23, increased patrols will be visible on both roadways and waterways as the department strives for a safe and responsible holiday for all.
Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the solemnity of the weekend, stating, “We can never forget that Memorial Day weekend is a time for us to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country and our freedoms. While the extended weekend provides us added time to enjoy our family and friends, we urge everyone to remember the reason for this holiday weekend and make responsible choices to keep our community safe.”

Last year, during Memorial Day weekend, Tampa saw 40 DUI arrests. This year, the department’s ambitious goal is to achieve zero impaired driving or boating incidents.
To aid in this effort, police are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead.
The department strongly recommends utilizing designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation to ensure a safe journey home. For those taking to the water, reminders were issued to adhere to all safety regulations, including wearing life jackets, and to prioritize sobriety while operating a vessel.
