The recent doubling of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, a move by the Trump administration to bolster American manufacturing, has ignited a fierce debate over its potential impact on consumers.
While Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is publicly blasting the policy, a closer look reveals a more complex picture with both strategic benefits and short-term challenges.
During her Wednesday appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weeknight,” Rep. Crockett expressed concerns about the tariffs’ effects on everyday expenses, citing potential increases in grocery bills and appliance prices.

The U.S. imports nearly 70% of the tin-plate steel used for essential food and pet food cans, meaning increased steel costs will translate directly to higher prices on store shelves.
“There are real impacts of the steel and aluminum tariffs,” Rep. Crockett, a member of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees, emphasized during her appearance. She highlighted a report from Marketplace detailing how these tariffs could directly impact grocery bills.
“We’re seeing all sorts of prices go up at the grocery store,” Crockett remarked, pointing to items like canned goods and air fryers as examples of products that could see price hikes.
However, from a conservative perspective, these tariffs are a crucial tool for protecting American industries and jobs from unfair foreign competition. For too long, domestic steel and aluminum producers have faced headwinds from countries that subsidize their industries, leading to a flood of cheap imports that undermine American businesses and workers.
This administration’s action aims to level the playing field, fostering a stronger domestic manufacturing base and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.

While acknowledging that some price adjustments may occur in the short term, proponents of the tariffs argue that a robust domestic industry is vital for national security and long-term economic stability. The initial costs may be a worthwhile investment to ensure American self-sufficiency and prevent critical industries from being hollowed out.
The discussion also touched upon the housing market, where steel is a key component. While Rep. Crockett suggested higher steel prices could lead to increased housing costs, it’s also true that supporting domestic steel production can create jobs and stimulate economic activity within the U.S. construction sector.
Regarding international relations, particularly with Canada, the administration’s approach emphasizes fair trade and reciprocal agreements. While Canada is a close ally and trading partner, ensuring that trade relationships are equitable benefits both nations in the long run. Any concerns about energy supply should be addressed through dialogue that prioritizes mutual economic interests and energy independence.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report, cited during the discussion, projects some economic impacts, including a slight increase in inflation. However, these projections often fail to fully account for the long-term benefits of strengthened domestic industries, increased national security through reduced reliance on foreign supply chains, and the potential for American innovation to flourish in a more competitive environment.
Ultimately, while consumers may feel some short-term adjustments, the strategic rationale behind these tariffs is to secure America’s economic future, according to the Trump admin.
The goal is to prioritize American workers and businesses, ensuring a robust and self-sufficient economy that can withstand global pressures. The focus should remain on the long-term benefits of revitalized domestic industries, even if it means some temporary shifts in consumer prices.
