The Kentucky Derby is one of sports’ most esteemed traditions. It will hold its 151st running on May 3, 2025, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Known as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” twenty elite thoroughbreds will compete for victory over 1 ¼ miles.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby is the qualifying route for three-year-old thoroughbreds through its designated prep races from September 2024 to mid-April 2025, during which horses earn points based on their final positions. Based on the current leaderboard, the five frontrunners for the upcoming Derby are below.

Sandman

Sandman holds 129 qualification points after his decisive victory in the Arkansas Derby last April. The 100-point victory demonstrated his capability to perform at 1 1/8 mile distances, strengthening his prospects for the longer derby race and positioning him as a top pick on FanDuel.

Sandman’s pedigree features his sire Tapit, who stands behind Belmont winners Creator (2016) and multiple Derby placers. This bloodline makes his offspring well-suited for both long races and quick times. The Canadian trainer Mark Casse utilizes his vast Triple Crown experience (War of Will, 2019 Preakness) to guide Sandman towards a racing career that has produced over $1.1 million in winnings.

Recent race results point to top physical condition, but his Churchill Downs debut on challenging deep dirt tracks remains an unknown factor. His late surge has proven to be one of his key advantages but he may struggle with adapting to the crowded pack of twenty horses at the Derby.

Tiztastic

Tiztastic takes position two with 119 points, which are driven by his Grade 2 Louisiana Derby achievement at Fair Grounds in March. His 1 3/16-mile victory at Fair Grounds brought him 100 points while displaying his ability to perform strongly against near-Derby race distances.

The colt Tiztastic inherits his genes from two champions: Tiz the Law, who won the 2020 Belmont Stakes, and Constitution, who sired Tiz the Law. Tiztastic brings together racing prowess with stamina through his parentage.

Tiztastic has accumulated almost $1.4 million in earnings thanks to Steve Asmussen (a trainer with over 10,000 career wins and Derby experience), who guided the horse to this total. Tiztastic’s solid performance early in the season suggests future success; however, his recent lack of top finishings at high-mileage races creates doubts about his ability to stay competitive until May.

Tiztastic excels with his tactical running approach, yet his performance against larger fields remains a question mark since he primarily races against small fields.

Tappan Street

Tappan Street secured third position with 110 points from his victory in the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on March 29, 2025. The Kentucky Derby contender Tappan Street carries the bloodline of dominating sire Into Mischief, who produced multiple-year champion and Derby-winning Authentic (2020). He possesses speed qualities but shows emerging stamina potential.

Tappan Street’s performance in the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby serves two purposes: first, the distance matches the Kentucky Derby profile, and second, previous winners often repeated at that race (25 total occurrences). The colt gains strength from his recent improved form yet faces the risk of competition at longer distances due to his limited experience in this distance category.

Sovereignty

Tappan Street and Sovereignty share 110 competition points, yet Sovereignty places in fourth position because it generates lower earnings ($548,800 compared to $619,400). The ranking system utilizes earnings as the deciding factor during ties. The 50-point victory in the Florida Derby and his 60-point prior performance showcase his consistent racing capabilities.

Sovereignty inherits genetic connections through Into Mischief as his father, which links him to a prestigious group of racers, including Tappan Street. The winning trainer, Bill Mott, has Hall of Fame credentials through his 2019 Derby victory with Country House and proves masterful in his strategies.

The colt displayed elite racing potential when he narrowly missed victory in the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby while approaching the half-million dollar earnings mark. Reliability is his main power because he frequently comes in position to earn prize money, but his failure to capture a decisive victory shows his limitations.

Final Gambit

Final Gambit secured 100 points after emerging victorious in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park which was 1 1/8 miles on synthetic surface. While Final Gambit has $446,400 in earnings, it remains uncertain if he will make the Bubble due to the 100-point criterion, yet other horses could still disrupt his position. Although he won on the synthetic surface, it raises doubts about his dirt performance potential, which Cox helps address through his training methods. Final Gambit benefits from versatility, but risks are elevated because he has never raced on the Churchill Downs dirt surface.

Leaderboard Wrap-Up

Five top contenders—Sandman (129 points), Tiztastic (119), Tappan Street (110), Sovereignty (110), and Final Gambit (100)—lead the way to the 151st Kentucky Derby, which will take place on May 3 at Churchill Downs. These five contenders have established a strong foundation despite upcoming Blue Grass Stakes and Santa Anita Derby races, which may change the leader positions. Sports enthusiasts can follow real-time standings updates through internet platforms. The upcoming Derby event will showcase these elite racing horses in a transformative display of equine greatness that builds legacies through two minutes of exciting galloping speed.
