MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents and visitors to prepare for significant traffic congestion and increased boating activity during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest periods of the year in the Florida Keys. In response to the anticipated influx of visitors, the Sheriff’s Office will have an increased law enforcement presence on both roadways and waterways.

Authorities urge motorists to exercise patience and plan their travel accordingly due to expected traffic slowdowns and backups throughout the Keys.

Adding to their efforts to ensure safety, the Sheriff’s Office has announced its participation in the national and statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Beginning this weekend and continuing through next month, deputies, along with partner law enforcement agencies, will be strictly enforcing seat belt laws across Monroe County.

Beyond seat belt enforcement, deputies will also be vigilant in addressing other dangerous driving behaviors, including passing in no-passing zones, illegal passing in turn lanes, speeding, and driving under the influence.

Safety on the water is also a top priority for the Sheriff’s Office. Marine units will be actively patrolling the waterways, focusing on unsafe boating practices, with a particular emphasis on preventing boating under the influence.

The Sheriff’s Office is strongly encouraging boaters to designate a sober operator to ensure the safe return of their vessel and passengers to shore.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that these enforcement efforts are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all those enjoying the Florida Keys during this busy holiday weekend. They urge everyone to travel and boat responsibly.
