President Donald Trump has named San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone to the advisory board of the newly established Religious Liberty Commission. The commission, created by executive order on May 1, aims to “vigorously enforce the historic and robust protections for religious liberty enshrined in Federal law.”
Archbishop Cordileone gained national attention in 2022 when he denied then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Holy Communion due to her public stance supporting abortion rights.

In a statement regarding his appointment, Archbishop Cordileone said, “Religious liberty is a critical issue in our time that needs to be defended and addressed. I am happy to join my brother bishops in providing a Catholic voice on this important topic at a national level.”
Cordileone previously explained that his decision regarding Pelosi was based on Church teaching, emphasizing that lawmakers have a responsibility to oppose legislation that does not protect life.
“After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, and the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion,” he stated on Twitter (now X) at the time.
The Religious Liberty Commission is tasked with investigating instances of religious liberty infringements in the United States and developing strategies to safeguard this right.

The commission will comprise diverse representatives from various societal sectors who will present their findings and recommendations to the White House.
The new commission’s creation follows accusations of religious freedom infringements against the Biden administration.
These accusations include an attempt to mandate religious doctors and hospitals to perform transgender surgeries against their faith-based objections and the issuance of a “transgender day of visibility” proclamation on Easter Sunday.
