President Donald Trump will maintain control of the National Guard in Los Angeles, at least until next week, after a federal appeals court swiftly blocked a lower court’s order that aimed to strip him of that authority.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals intervened late Thursday night, granting the Trump administration a temporary reprieve and scheduling a hearing for Tuesday to further consider the contentious issue.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded after U.S. District Judge Charles B. Breyer, a Clinton appointee, ruled that President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles amidst ongoing riots was illegal and sought to prevent their continued presence.

This decision followed a lawsuit filed Monday by California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who argued that the President’s Saturday decision to deploy the Guard was unconstitutional.

The Trump administration immediately appealed Judge Breyer’s ruling, leading to the Ninth Circuit’s quick intervention. President Trump wasted no time celebrating the appeals court’s decision, taking to Truth Social Friday morning.

“The Appeals Court ruled last night that I can use the National Guard to keep our cities, in this case Los Angeles, safe,” Trump wrote. “If I didn’t send the Military into Los Angeles, that city would be burning to the ground right now. We saved L.A. Thank you for the Decision!!!”

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly echoed the administration’s confidence, stating Thursday night that they look forward to an “ultimate victory on the issue.”

Kelly asserted that “The court’s order is unprecedented and puts our brave federal officials in danger,” emphasizing that “The district court has no authority to usurp the President’s authority as Commander in Chief. The President exercised his lawful authority to mobilize the National Guard to protect federal buildings and personnel in Gavin Newsom’s lawless Los Angeles.”

The legal battle over the National Guard’s deployment in Los Angeles is far from over, with Tuesday’s hearing at the Ninth Circuit set to be a pivotal moment in determining who ultimately holds the reins of authority during times of civil unrest.
