United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio today issued a strong condemnation of sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, New Zealand, and Australia on two sitting members of the Israeli cabinet.

The statement, released this afternoon, underscored the U.S. government’s rejection of these measures, asserting they do not align with ongoing American-led diplomatic efforts in the region.

In his press statement, Secretary Rubio emphasized that the sanctions “do not advance U.S.-led efforts to achieve a ceasefire, bring all hostages home, and end the war.”

Secretary Rubio further rejected “any notion of equivalence,” drawing a stark contrast between the Israeli government and Hamas.

“Hamas is a terrorist organization that committed unspeakable atrocities, continues to hold innocent civilians hostage, and prevents the people of Gaza from living in peace,” the statement read. This re-assertion of the U.S. position aims to remind international partners of what Washington views as the core issue and “who the real enemy is.”

The Secretary concluded the statement with a direct appeal to the sanctioning nations: “The United States urges the reversal of the sanctions and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel.”

This firm declaration reiterates the unwavering U.S. commitment to its ally, Israel, amidst increasing international pressure and differing perspectives on the conflict’s resolution.

The condemnation from the U.S. State Department signals potential diplomatic friction between the United States and its traditional allies as the international community grapples with the complexities of the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
